Chlorine

What is Chlorine?

The name comes from the Greek meaning greenish-yellow.

Why is it needed?

Each cell has a mineral-laden fluid found both inside and outside the cell and this fluid carries electrical charges throughout the body. Chlorine ions act as electrolytes (part of this fluid) with chlorine found in higher concentrations outside the cell. The fluid is effectively essential in the activation of nerve impulses. It is also found in acids in the stomach that are responsible for dissolving foods.

Fluid containing chlorine is also found around the brain and spine.

Where is it found?

Table salt and other foods

What happens if you are deficient?

You can become deficient if you have prolonged vomiting and diarrhoea or due to heavy sweating.

Deficiency is very rare but symptoms would include; failure to gain weight, constipation, abnormal electrolyte balance.

How much is normally taken?

The RDI is between 1,700 to 5,100 mg a day but many exceed this as chlorine is found in table salt.

Are there any contraindications or side effects?

If you supplement with straight chlorine as opposed to phosphatidyl choline you may experience fishy odours.
